He was styled Lord Norreys from birth until acceding in 1854. ==Background== Born at Dover Street, he was the eldest son of Montagu Bertie, 5th Earl of Abingdon and his first wife Emily Gage, fifth daughter of General Hon. Thomas Gage and descendant of the Schuyler family and Van Cortlandt Dutch families from British North America. Bertie was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a Master of Arts in 1829. In 1834, he received a Doctorate of Civil Law by the University of Oxford.〔
